Biophysics: living systems & Biophysics and TCM
Living Systems
What is a living system & how do I know I am one? To sum it up simply, I know because of my autopoeisis. My body regenerates itself as an established mature organism. When I was conceived, my DNA laid the foundation for my cellular structure & function and ultimately my whole body, all of its organ systems. Now my mind and body work together to thrive and survive in this biosphere. I respond to the environment & adapt to changes, I maintain my health with food and water of good quality & adequate rest. My body heals itself with these supplies and energy, and my mind doesn't need to be conscious of it. However, my mind can promote healing. If I feed my mental energy into a positive mindset then I stay healthy consistently and heal more readily from injuries and illness. In this way, I am also autopoeitc. I can also see that my perspective and focus can help me produce myself. In other words, to a large extant, I have the ability to create myself and my life. Of course there are uncontrollable factors like the climate, but I can influence the cleanliness of my home and car environment. I can also anticipate in my social environment that promotes growth and progress. I can also put energy into personal attributes and patterns. This is how I know I'm a living system.
Biophysics and TCM
There's a great need to be able to explain the mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine to the Amercian people. How does a needle promote tissue growth? What is Qi? How do Chinese herbs work? As future acupuncturists, it would benefit our practice to investigate and provide evidence for patients if they need to know possible answers. In my opinion, biophysics would undoubtably provide at least some biochemical and quantum reasons for the mechanisms of TCM. If I remember accurately, during the Research Methodology class we've taken before, there are certain parts of the body where there are more cellular junctions, areas where cells communicate with each other using chemicals and electrical impulses. Many of those areas coincide with the location of acupuncture points and channels. I believe that TCM, since it has been cultivated over thousands of years from a different cultural lens, there may be a lot of understanding we're missing because our technology has yet to develop to a way to measure the mechanisms on a reductionist level what the ancient Chinese scientists and healers were able to understand on a macro level, not yet understood perhaps by the mainstream Amercian consciousness.
